Dune light box

I had this idea in my head for quite a while until I finally decided to make it reality because I was in need of a nice gift for someone I had disappointed.

I used the old packaging box from a fitness watch I never use as a frame, so it's rather small. I found a nice use for my marking gauge to make all the marks I needed to evenly cut out the front frame and the sides of the back piece. The box was almost completely black which suited me, I covered some light print on the back and sides with a black marker.

Since this wasn't my first light box most of the process was familiar to me already. The biggest problem was to draw a version of each of the different layers that was acceptable to me (drawing is not my forte). For the back I used multiple layers of a colored silk paper that I bought recently in order to achieve a sunset ambient color.

I made two mistakes this time:

• I chose a width of 5mm for the front frame which at that time seemed good enough. However I forgot to consider the width of the box itself which took a few millimeters away. Since the front frame should cover up the dividers and the frames of the different layers itself in the end I had little space left to work with. It all worked out but it was more complicated than it needed to be. Also the insides (sides and top) are a bit more exposed than I would have liked.
• Since the box was very small there was not much space between the LEDs and the diffusion layer. So actually the light does not shine through uniformly but instead reveals the position of each LED behind the diffusion layer. This was disappointing and I couldn't completely remove this effect even with multiple diffusion layers. Since I was confined by the dimensions of the box that I chose there was nothing more to do but for the next lamp I'll be sure to always leave some extra space to prevent this from happening.

In spite of these little imperfections I think it looks really cool, I'm mostly happy with the composition and the color and am already thinking about the next light box.
